For the second year in a row, our buddy Curry helped out Hunters Helping Heroes by offering to bring out a few wounded vets from across the country. He expressed interested in bringing out Larry (who he hosted last year on a waterfowl hunt/a double leg amputee and awesome guy) and told me to find another wounded vet. Larry has a friend who now lives near him in Ohio who is a femur down amputee who was interested in starting to hunt. We invited the pair of men to come join us in New Jersey for the 2013 Bay Bash. The weather was cold but you couldn’t keep these two certified bad asses out of the boat or the blind, they were in destruction mode and we did our best to put them on the birds!!!
Day #1 – As you may recall we had 25mph winds and snow Friday and the temp when we left the dock was -6 out so we sat a blind on a private island to try and stay out of the wind a little and the first two birds that came in were shot by Jason…a beautiful drake buffie and a drake mallard…both birds only took one shot each and they were Jason’s first ducks ever!!!
Day #2 – We headed south in search of some brant and anything else in store…we plugged at them all day long getting our 4 man limit of brant (1 banded and shot by Larry) some buffies, broadies and mergies to round out another fantastic day of shooting!!! The brant ended up being a 10 year old stud from Nunavut, Canada!!!
Day #3 – We decided to do a little bigger of a group and found a guide who could hold a 6 man crew…we went out with Roy Trainor of Muddy Waters Waterfowling in search of some old squaw out . It was foggy at first and we were plucking away at the birds dropping them as they cruised the suds…the fog lifted and it was game on, before we knew it we had filled a 7 man limit mostly comprised of old squaw, a hen scoter and a few buffies!!!!
